Ice Age Trail, Day Eleven

Tuesday, May 12, 2026

14 miles today. Total miles so far: 177.5.

Today was a slog. I didn't sleep well again--tossing and turning to try to find a comfortable position + a storm--but the tent held up great and the campsite was much appreciated after that long road walk. Not far up the trail was an ice age interpretive center, which was closed, but the staff saw me outside and let me come in to fill up on water and charge my phone a bit. I was appreciative of their help and we had a nice chat about trails and travel. One had been to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky!

This was a great section of trail, which I recognized even though I was moving pretty slowly all day. This area features many glacial remnants, including erratic boulders, kettles, and things I was too tired to remember reading about on the signs. Along the way I meet the enthusiastic Trudy, a section hiker considering a trip on the Superior Trail, which I did more than a decade ago.

I was glad I'd filled up on water at the interpretive center since some sources were not easy to get to. I probably didn't drink enough today anyway, but made up for that once I got to camp at the pretty Picnic Lake.
