Ice Age Trail, Day One

Saturday, May 2, 2026

20 miles today. Total miles so far: 20.

The trail started with an hour-long drive from our Airbnb. With below-freezing temperatures, it was a frosty morning. After a couple of miles through The Interstate State Park, on the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota, the trail emerged onto a road, and I couldn't resist stopping for coffee at a local shop. The next miles were surprisingly pleasant hiking through and around St Croix Falls, including the first Leopold benches of the trip (the trail is famous for these benches). After a break at Lions Park along the river and a pretty section of trail, I had several miles of road walk to the Gandy Dancer, a multi-use trail. I took a long break in Centuria at bar, polishing off an order of mini corn dogs and fried green beans, which is about as close as you'll get to a balanced meal in a small town bar. Revived, I pushed on to finish the day in Milltown with one tiny blister next to preventive tape I'd applied that morning.
